The Organs at SCAPC

gallery organTHE GALLERY ORGAN

St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church is blessed with two very fine pipe organs. The instrument pictured to the right is an Austin Organ (III/37) that was installed new in 1980. In addition to the main organ pictured, there is a Chancel division that works quite well antiphonally or as an integral feature of the complete instrument. There is also a trompette-en-chamade on the front wall of the sanctuary that was added by J. Adrian Cook, POB, in 1996.

In our Chapel, which seats approximately 65 people, we have a shining little jewel of an instrument that was built as part of a collaboration between Peter Collins, Ltd. of Leicester, England and J. Adrian Cook, POB, of Thibodaux, Louisiana. The organ has six stops and operates (with the exception of the wind supply) by mechanical action. This tracker-action organ was installed in the summer of 1996 as part of a substantial gift by the late Elizabeth and Paul Selley, supplemented with memorials designated to the memory of the relatives of a number of SCAPC members.

Another memorial gift, this single manual instrument of Flemish design was built by builder Richard Kingston of North Carolina. It utilizes two sets of strings at 8' pitch which may be played separately or in combination, and is equipped with a "lute" stop. This little harpsichord has a clever trick up its sleeve. It plays normally at A415, but is able to convert to modern pitch as well, making it extremely useful as a solo or accompanying instrument.
